No Stopping 'M:I-4' Over New Year's Weekend

With 2011 coming to an end this weekend, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol once again claimed the top spot at the box office. Not far behind were fellow sequels Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, followed by a surging War Horse and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The Top 12 earned an estimated $151 million, which is a slight improvement over the same frame last year and 15 percent up on 2005 (the last time New Year's fell on a Sunday). The fourth Mission: Impossible movie was up six percent to $31.3 million, which brings its total to $134.1 million through Sunday. If that figure sticks when actuals are reported on Tuesday, Ghost Protocol will have exceeded Mission: Impossible III's $134.03 million total through just 17 days in theaters. Additionally, the movie is projected to pass the latest Sherlock Holmes movie on Sunday to become December 2011's top-grossing movie.

M:i — Ghost Protocol A Towering Hit

Paramount’s Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol towered above a slew of imposing openers and strong holdovers as it grossed an estimated $25.8 million over the Friday-to-Sunday holiday period and $39.5 million between Friday and Monday. The film, which opened last weekend primarily in a limited number of IMAX theaters, expanded on Wednesday, and will have earned around $71.9 million domestically as of Monday. Two holdover films finished in second and third place, with Warner Bros.’ Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and Fox’s Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked grossing $17.8 million and $13.3 million respectively for the three-day weekend. Three new films followed with relatively soft numbers. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which some pundits had expected would give Ghost Protocol a run for the money, proved to be somewhat of a disappointment as it collected $13 million over the three days to place fourth. Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin proved to be an even greater disappointment. Although it opened strongly overseas, where it has collected $230 million to date, its opening in North America brought in only $8.8 million for the three days.

Natalie Portman angry over Patty Jenkins leaving Thor 2

Monster director Jenkins had been announced as the replacement for Kenneth Branagh, after Branagh had turned down the opportunity to return. It was an appointment that would have made Jenkins the first female director to head up a major superhero movie, only for her to leave the project abruptly at the beginning of the month

Whilst “creative differences” were mooted, The Hollywood Reporter suggests that Jenkins was fired without warning, a course of events that has riled Portman.
It is thought that the star had already been considering her position in the sequel over concerns that it would keep her from spending time with her new baby. However, those issues were apparently resolved, with Jenkins presence a key factor in Portman’s decision.Portman is now contractually obliged to appear in the film, although Marvel hope to appease her somewhat by involving her in the search for Jenkins’ replacement. Word on who that might be, as we get it.

Universal Pictures has acquired 80% of distribution rights — including in the U.S. — to the large-scale dramatic thriller that Luc Besson will direct with Angelina Jolie in the starring role. The script, rooted in true scientific elements, was written by Besson, who will also direct. His EuropaCorp developed the project and will co-finance, and production is set to begin in April 2012 mostly in EuropaCorp’s new production facilities in Paris. Virginie Besson Silla will oversee the project on behalf of EuropaCorp.

Annie Awards Nominations Led By Kung Fu Panda 2, Puss in Boots, Rango.

It's a strange year in the Oscar animated category, as there are so many sequels. The Annie Award nominations often become a bellwether of where the race could go. Thus Dreamworks had a very good day, as "Kung Fu Panda 2" led the field with twelve nominations, followed by DreamWorks' "Shrek" spin-off "Puss in Boots" and Paramount/Nickelodeon's "Rango," with nine each. Steven Spielberg's "The Adventures of Tintin" landed four nominations, for animated feature, writing, score and editing. It remains to be seen if the Academy animation branch will go for the performance capture film.
